The Diaphragmatic actions in Yoga Practice

This month for my Wednesday class at 6:30 at Mind Body and Pilates we have been focusing on the basics and mechanics of breathing.

In this practice we will bring attention to the movements of the diaphragm. We will explore the saying I have heard from other yogis, and also use, "use the breath to move into the nooks and crannies of your body." and "allow your breath to move into your lower back"

First I am going to send you to this beautiful link to visualize the diaphragmatic movement of breathing. The Accessory Muscles of Breath - Part II  Take a look at inspiration. Notice that upon inspiration the diaphragm contracts, drawing down and puts pressure on the contents (or organs) of the abdomen. There are 3 muscular portions of the diaphragm. Sternal, costal and vertebral.  Inspiration presses down and stimulates the abdominal organs by applying pressure to them. Giving your organs a massage. The phrase that I use, "puff up your kidneys" you can visualize the vertebral portion of the diaphragm pushing down on the kidneys to stimulate them.
